Mobile & Nursery Accessory Safety
Your baby's nursery will not look quite complete until you get your mobile in it's proper position. Regarding safety, it is acceptable to hang your baby crib mobiles directly over the crib until your baby can attain a sitting position. At this point, the mobile needs to go elsewhere. How about the changing table? A mobile can be an excellent distraction in this area.
You will also want to make sure your mobile is securely fastened to the crib railing since not all mobiles fit every crib. Call the manufacturer before you purchase the mobile to double check. Also, avoid mobiles with flashing lights and shiny parts. These distracting mobiles can actually keep your little one awake instead of lull him to sleep.
Since many baby bedding sets come with the mobile, coordinating your nursery will be a breeze. If your crib bedding didn't include this nursery necessity, there is a good chance the baby bedding designer offers the mobile as an add-on. Most mobiles play Brahm's Lullaby to soothe your little one to sleep. If typical lullabies aren't your thing, try to find a mobile that you can record your own music on or one that will rotate without the music so you can play your own tunes on a radio.
Toys and stuffed animals are soft and pretty to look at, but like pillows, they do not belong in your baby's crib. It is a better idea to save them for playtime. Overall, it is best to keep it simple. The less infant bedding accessories you actually put inside the crib, the less you have to worry about. Just because an accessory is beautiful and came along as part of a coordinated set, it does not necessarily need to be inside the crib with your sleeping baby. Better to play it safe and place the decorative pillows, toys and comforters elsewhere in the nursery.
Try Ceiling Sculptures Instead
Mobiles can be a a bit on the traditional side, so new age parents are opting for ceiling sculptures. These creative nursery decorations are similar to mobiles in that they hang over your little one's head but they are hung from the ceiling and tend to be much bigger than the typical mobile. Most sculptures are not battery operated and don't play music. They do move around freely due to fans and wind gusts. More and more baby bedding designers are offering ceiling sculptures as an option in their crib bedding collections.
Don't feel that you shouldn't decorate your nursery with fun accessories like pillows and toys just because they can't go in the crib. There are tons of options for these items when you are not in the room. Rest decorative pillows on the rocking chair or window seal. Fluffy comforters can hang from the wall as decor. Invest in a coordinating toy bag for all of those soft toys until baby is ready to play.
